Default 15 OTU Wimpey lost Jun 41

I believe a Wimpey was lost in June 1941 whilst in transit for the Middle East, amongst the crew was Pilot Officer (Obs) L H Campbell-Roberts RCAF - the crew spent several days in dinghy and this officer was lost (poss 27 Jun 41) as he swam 4 miles towards warships hoping for rescue for himself and his his mates in the dinghy.

The ships didnt see him and continued on their course. Not long afterwards the airmen were sighted by a flying boat and rescued.

I am keen to find the type/serials/squadron codes of the aircraft and names of the crew if possible please.

    Pete,
According to CWGC, his surname was Campbell-Rogers, but you were right with the date 27/6/41.

    Hi Pete
From a book,RAF Bomber Losses in the Middle East and Med, David Gunby and Pelham Temple, He was lost on Wellington Ic,P9277, on a delivery flight from Luqa(Malta) to Egypt
    The crew were:-
    P/O F C Butler,pilot
    Sgt A D Cragg, probably co-pilot
    P/O L H Campbell-Rogers,RCAF, Obs
    Sgt F R Adams,W/op
    Sgt P D Webster, A/g
    Sgt J T Lindsay, A/g
There are no details beyond that the a/c ditched at 0900. There is no Sqn as the a/c was on charge with OADU(Overseas Aircraft Delivery Unit). It is highly likely that both a/c and crew were on their way to a ME Posting. It was a common practice to marry up a/c with available crewmen as a means of getting them all to a new war theatre. It didn't necessarily mean that they would have stayed together at final destination.Cragg and Campbell-Rogers were the two who died.
    Regards
    Dick
