Thank you for the information Mark. I have also heard from Linzee he went on to fly Douglas Skymasters with 232 Sqn. Also, his full name was John William Holbrook HARWOOD.

An up-date on pilot - 126025 John William Holbrook HARWOOD, former "B" flight commander on 76 Squadron Halifaxes, Holme-on-Spalding Moor.

In a very short space of time I have discovered he was posted on to 246 Sqn (Halifaxes Liberators Yorks and Skymasters) from 76 Sqn then from 246 Sqn on to 232 Sqn with the 246 Sqn Douglas Skymasters (on lease loan from USAAF) to fly the Ceylon to Australia run until civil airlines were able to take over. His flight engineer on 232 Sqn, his final squadron, was Harry Widdup of New Zealand.

Sometime in late 1946 he left the R.A.F. to become a medical student somewhere in Australia. If this helps to generate further information on John William Holbrook HARWOOD, service number 126025 I will be more then grateful. I would particularly like to know where and when he was born. Thank you.

    Hello Norman,

John Harwood has the following file at the National Archives of Australia (NAA).:

    NAA: A12288 6/133

The Title of the file states that Harwood was born in Nottingham, England on 23 March, 1920. Full title reads: [HARWOOD, John William (Air Force No.: 126025) born in Nottingham, England on 23 March 1920 - Application dated: Palam(?). 30 January 1946].

The file itself, relates to: Applications for permission to remain in Australia upon discharge from the British Armed Forces lodged both in Australia and abroad (Form 49) [and Air Force release letters for British airmen and airwomen].

    Unfortunately, not digitised.

    Norman,

Before you get Harwood's A12288 digitised, you might care to have a look at what you will get!

The following is a digitised example of what an A12288 consists of:-

1211855 DENTON, Leonard Henry Thomas, ex-618 Sqn. RAF.

    See: NAA: A12288 4/97

The files may contain anything from 1 to 4 pages.

    Thank you Col.

On second thoughts and following your wise comment and after looking at the example, I will give this a miss as all I have to gain is Harwoods home address in Nottingham, UK. Everything else I have already discovered. I have got used to requesting files that are often over 100 pages long and it never occurred to me a file could be so short. Thanks again.

    Default Doctor Harwood

    Hello Australian friends,

Since my posting about the RAF service of Squadron Leader John William Holbrook Harwood, DFM DFC, I have discovered he was born in Nottingham 23 March 1920. In 1946 on finishing his service with 232 Squadron at Pallam, he applied to enter the Commonwealth of Australia. In 1947 he attended the medical school at Adelaide University graduating in 1953 with MBBS.

I have written to the University and they told me he graduated in the 1953 MBBS cohort. I am awaiting his 1946 immigration file to be digitalised on the NAA website but dont think it will reveal anything new.

Could someone advise on how to go about tracing his career in Australia since 1953? Thank you.

    Norman,

One John William Harwood (late of Seaforth, NSW), aged 84, passed away on 16-2-2005 at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, NSW. Can't be absolutely sure it's your man, needs verification.
