    Default Unaccounted airmen - 23-7-1942

What was the place of death registration for AC1 John P.H. SARGENT - 1431846 - age 41, whose name I couldn't find in Flight archives.

Also looking for unit and possible cause of death of Sgt Douglas H. YEO - 1313389, whose name is commemorated on Panel 97 of the Runnymede Memorial.

    Aircraft losses for this day:
Beaufighter IIF - R2440 - 54 OTU - flew into ground 1 mile SE of Duns, Berwickshire (already as a casualty on this a/c: F/Lt W.D.W. HILTON - RCAF C/1626).
    Hurricane I - P2901 - 55 OTU - crashed in forced landing Lessonhall, Cumberland.
Spitfire V - W3958 - 1 CRU (Chemical Research Unit ??) - dived into ground Cumnor 3 mile WSW of Oxford.
    Tutor I - K3450 - 2 FIS - crashed on overshoot Brackla.
Hotspur Glider II - HH141 - 5 GTS - crashed on approach Kidlington.

Regards and thanks for your help.
    Henk.

    Hi Henk,

I have a note that Yeo was No.59 OTU.

The RNLI records of service 1939-46 had the following un-attributed loss that I needed to follow up.

    JULY 23RD. - MARYPORT, CUMBERLAND.
An aeroplane had been reported down in the sea, but nothing was found.- Rewards, 15 3s.

    Regards
    Ross

J P H Sargeant is in the Flight magazine dated 24th Sep 42. Note spelling with an 'e'.
    He is listed under DOAS.

GRO RAF List does give Yeo as 59 OTU.

    Cheers John,

It confirms my suspicion that the RNLI no service was to a No.59 OTU aircraft.

    Corrected Info

Via a inquiry from Jim Corbett, I looked into this and can confirm Spitfire V W3958 of 1 CRU (Civilian Repair Unit) at Cowley was being flown by ROY PHILIP HALLOWELL CAREW (formally First Officer at ATA) when it crashed at Cumnor Hill, 3.5 miles West South West of Oxford on 23/07/1942

This is his listing on CWGC

    HALLOWELL-CAREW, ROY PHILLIP
Rank:CivilianDate of Death:23/07/1942Age:30Regiment/Service:Civilian War Dead Reporting AuthorityABINGDON, RURAL DISTRICT

    Additional Information:

A.T.A. Instructor; Test Pilot. Son of Roy St. Frey Hallowell-Carew and Lillian Kitty Hallowell-Carew, of 4 Rosedale Road, Stoneleigh, Ewell, Surrey; husband of Ivy Ellen Hallowell-Carew, of Cedarcroft, Sticklepath, Okehampton, Devonshire. Died at Cumnor Hill

Birth registered as Roy Philip Carew at Kensington, Death registered as Roy Philip Hallowell Carew at Abingdon

ATA records have him as ROY PHILIP HALLOWELL CAREW

and he is listed as Roy Philip Hallowell Carew in Times August 6th 1942, as Died on Active Service by family and "Test Pilot, Ministry Aircraft Production"

    Not AA874 as per

    http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?10546-Master-N7500-23-8-1940

    And

    http://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co.uk/memorial/search.php?year1=1940&year2=1949

I looked into AA874 for the day after

"Engine failed at 10ft, a/c put down in drome with wheels retracted to prevent overrun 24.7.42, W/Cdr P.W.K.Nicholls 34224"

W3958 has Cat E on 23/7/1942 and AB has it crashing at Cumnor Hill
