Default Loss 139 Sqn Mosquito XX KB118 on 6-7 August 1944

    Dear all,

Who can help me with details on the cause of loss & time of crash of 139 Squadron Mosquito Mk. XX KB118 that failed to return from an op to Castrop-Rauxel on 6-7 August 1944? The pilot F/O Hooke was taken PoW, his Nav is buried in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery.

    Cheers, Theo

    Hello and good evening Henk,

Many thanks for your info, much appreciated! There is no documented evidence that this Mossie was shot down by a NF (even though more than a dozen Nachtjäger were scrambled to intercept the Castrop-Rauxel raid), but I'm still trying to get in fo on the cause of loss, perhaps F/O Hooke made a statement on this after the war..?

    Cheers, Theo

    Hi Theo,

Here's what I have for this one:

6/7 August 1944, F/O B. E. Hooke. Mosquito. Heavy Flak. 7500ft. A/C abandoned in air. Due to loss of control. Aircraft condition unknown. Radio apparatus on except when shot down. (http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Information_from_Prisoner_of_War_i n_Stalag_Luft_III)

My guess is the aircraft was abandoned at 7,500 feet, not hit by heavy flak at that altitude.

    Cheers,

    Mark
