Hi are you sure it was a Lancaster or RAF plane at all?

15/16 July - 165 Halifaxes were over France, 5 lost, 24 Lancasters over Italy, 2 lost but over Italy

16/17 July - 18 Lancasters over Italy. 1 lost over Italy

17/18 July- 4 Wellingtons over France without loss

    hello,

I can only concur with Pavel. Quoting from Bomber Command Losses volume 4 (1943), during the night 16/17th July 1943, raid against Cislago, Lancaster III DV183 from No. 207 Squadron was lost, 6 crewmembers are buried in Milano War Cemetery, wireless operator Sgt E. MORRIS survived and was captured. Lancaster III ED538 of No. 467 Squadron crash-landed and caught fire while landing at a forward base in North Africa. No injuries reported. Only other loss for that night is Hudson III T9465 which was written off at Blida when a Blenheim ran into it.

Only one loss on 17th July, Mosquito IX LR502 of No. 1409 flight (a weather unit), with the two crews prisoners of war.

Either the date is wrong, or it's a U.S. loss. I have two B-17s lost that day : one ditched in the Channel, the other came down at Heligoland.

    Default LANCASTER in France

    Hello glaciergirl,

If the date is correct then I can only agree with the other contributors, and could only find the following.

    15/16-7-1943
    9 Sqdn - JA679 "P"
    50 Sqdn - DV167 "M"
    61 Sqdn - EE190 "M" (Algeria)

    16/17-7-1943
    207 Sqdn - DV183 "W"

    18-7-1943
    1661 HCU - W4947 "Z" (Training Flight)

    Picking up on Joss's B17's,
    16-7-1943
42-30305 was lost in a crash after T/O in the UK.
    17-7-1943
42-29872 Ditched in the North Sea, 1 KIA 9 returned after rescue by HSL 2551.
42-3219 went down near Heligoland 10 crew KIA.

There was also a B24 lost this date,
42-63763 of the 44th BG 67th BS. Target Naples, hit by flak then hit by fighters, MACR 0149, 8 crew baled safe, 3 were killed 5 became pow's and 2 evaded.

    All the best
    Alex
