    Default Lanc 431 Sqn downed by Me262 - 31.3.45

I have read a couple of references to the loss of 431 Sqn Lanc X KB859 (SE-U) F/Lt PJ Hurley RCAF including a write up by the pilot's son.

Apparently it crashed c.0907 at Hittfeld, 9km South of Harburg quite close to KB869/419 Sqn shot down about the same time and recorded as an Me262 loss.

Can anybody advise if an Me262 did shoot down KB859 and if the pilot/unit of the Me262 is known.

    Thanks for any help.

    Dear PeteS,

    I have the following informations:

On March 31 1945 Pilots of JG7 scored several victories

    Oblt. Sturm (1)
    Oblt. Grünberg (2)
    Lt. Todt (2)
    Lt. Schenk (2)
    Oblt. Schall (2)
    Fhr. Ehrig (2)
    Lt. Weihs (1 prob)
    Flieger Reiher (1)

All of these victories occured in the Hamburg-Harburg area. Following the chronicle of JG7 the Me262 caused a real chaos among the Bomber streams, chutes and burning bombers everywhere. I'm afraid that it is impossible to get true evidence about the pilot who shot down KB859 but its very likely that KB859 fell victim to a Me262. The Luftgau-Report states that KB859 was brought down by the dual effort of a fighter (Me262) and flak (3. Flakdivision).

    Hope this helps!

    regards

    Steve
