    Default Halifax JD205,77 Sqdn, 21/22 June 1943

Looking for further info about the loss of Halifax JD205. On the 21/22 June 1943 the a/c was shotdown by Hptm Dieter Frank 2/NJG1 and fell at Hal between Boxtel?Esch in Holland.
Pilot Sgt J.Gardner, Sgt F.G.Hawthorne, Sgt D.A.Clarke(RCAF),Sgt S.Nicholson made POW. P/O A.Hagan was captured but escaped. Both airgunners Sgt A.R.Currie(RCAF) and Warrant Officer II R.H.King(RCAF) where perished. Looking for the 77Sqdn ORB's for this crew, and I would like to get in touch with the suviving crewmembers and/or relatives.

    Many Thanks,
    Adrian

We have a fair amount of the 1943 77 Sq. ORB at Elvington (Yorkshire Air Musem). The Gardner crew arrived from 1658 HCU (Riccall) on 16/5/1943 with the crew lost on 21/22 June except Hagan, Clark & King were not in this crew but Luther, Worrall & Ledger were.
In May the Gardner crew operated on 23/24 against Dortmund, 25/26 against Dusseldorf,27/28 against Essen and 29/30 against Wuppertal. Apart from the 23/24 when the crew as posted in, flew, we don't have a crew list. June is missing.

    Default Halifax JD205

Many, many Thanks for this information which is very usefull. Sad that June is missing. Another question regarding the Gardner crew. Was Luther, Worrall and Ledger the actual crew at Gardners crew?? Do you have the full names of the three airmen?? Could you let me know if Gillian Houghton(Sgt Gardners Daughter) is a member of the 77 Sqdn Assn??

I found the crashsite and also found a lot of parts. Sadly only fulelageparts and window parts. Will continue the search.

    Regards,
    Adrian

Apologies for intrusion, but CWGC has only one record, for Luther showing as 77 Sqdn member.
    Extract details as follows:-
    Name: LUTHER, TERENCE WILFRED CHARLES
    Rank: Sergeant
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
    Unit Text: 77 Sqdn.
Age: 21. Date of Death: 23/06/1943
    Service No: 1338934
Additional information: Son of Edward Albert and Edith Mary Luther, of Walthamstow, Essex.
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 157. Memorial: RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL

Hopefully that means the other 2, Worrall and Ledger, survived.

I will check Worrall & Ledger on Monday but they certainly didn't die with 77 Squadron.

    Hi John,

Many Thanks for this info. Everything on this crew have my interest. Also I am busy with JD321,KN-C lost over Helvoirt on the 3rd November 1943. Do you have the ORB's for 77 Sqdn for the Jones crew?

    Thanks,
    Adrian

Jones crew - records incomplete but operated:
    17/18 Aug. 1943 DT807 Peenemunde
    12/13 Aug 1943
    3/4 July 1943 JB911 Cologne
    9/10 July 1943 JB911 Gelsenkirchen
    13/14 July 1943 JB911 Aachen
    15/16 July JB781 Montbeliard

Jones promotion to P/O in LG 25/11/43

Worrall & Ledger - no service no. or initials in ORB. So nothing conclusive.
