    Default C.E.G. Grace, 74.Sqdn

    Gentlemen,

C.E.G Grace, a member of 74.Sqdn, died in captivity on 7th November 1943 and is buried on Dürnbach War Cemetary, Germany.

Is there anything known about him? His rank (Leading Aircraftman) is unusual for a pilot or even a crewmwmber of an a/c...

    Thanks in advance

Hi Heuser - just an theoretical and baseless idea - No. 74 Sq was posted to Egypt in 1942 so he maybe was a member of ground staff and being captured in Africa and then moved to the PoW camp in Germany?

Found an interesting link for you: http://www.74squadron.org.uk/History.htm

In August the Squadron exchanged its Hurricanes for Spitfire Vbs and Vcs and transferred to Cyprus from where it was sent to the Aegean islands of Cos and Simi, only to be caught up almost immediately in the German invasion.

Air and ground crew were drafted in to help in the islands` defence and there are many stories of bravery within Squadron ranks as well as those of adventurous escapes. Unfortunately 1 member was killed and 17 ground crew were captured and became POWs. They have often harrowing stories to tell.

So your man can be one of them...

Also you can try to contact the association to get more info on your man
