Default Difference in CWGC and TWGPP

    Hello folks

I found this little difference in a Casualties llisting between the CWGC database:

Ok, the CWGC is down at present but they list his unit as

    4023 Sqdn, RAF Regiment

    and the database at the

    The War Graves Photographic Project

    Devlin, Michael
Cemetery: Knockmoyle (St. Mary) Roman Catholic Cemetery
    Country: Northern Ireland
    Area: County Tyrone
    Rank: Aircraftman 1st Class
    Official Number: 1504358
    Unit: 4023 A.A. Flight <------------------------
    Force: Royal Air Force
    Nationality: British
    Details:
8th March 1943. Age 20. Son of James and Mary Jane Devlin of Knockmoyle

Just the slight difference between the unit listing format, basically the TWGPP entry would appear to be more correct as the AA Flights were numbered in that 4xxx series.

Just for info and maybe its a once off anomoly.

    Thanks Amrit,

    nearest I can find is

AIR 29/1174 No. 4271 Servicing Echelon, Down Ampney ??

    AIR 29/1174 No. 7273 Servicing Echelon, Cox's Bazaar 1944

Perhaps a little project I might do to review them.

I checked GRO RAF list and

Curry is listed simply as 5012 Sqdn.
Aungier is listed as 271 Sqdn. !! So unless he was based with a unit servicing their aircraft?

According to Final Landings by Cummings

Aungier was aboard Dakota, KN557 of No 271 Sqn which flew into high ground near Marseilles. He is also listed in here as being with 7273 Sqn RAF Regiment but I suspect this was an error. The GRO listing of 271 Sqn is obviously due to the aircraft being one of theirs.

I pulled as many RAF regt men from CWGC yesterday with Geoffs search engine and it turns out there are only these three odd entries in a list of 410 personel. All the others are 27xx to 29xx units. There are a number of non unit listed men but theres no big difference here.

Misplaced panic. I'll see about plucking up the courage to tell CWGC.

    Email from CWGC this morning.

    "Dear Mr Burke

Thank you for your e mail of 14 November. Please accept our apologies for the delay in reply: due to the high volume of enquiries received by our offices we are currently working to clear a backlog.

Thank you for pointing out the error in the unit which we record for Aircraftman Devlin: this occurred during maintenance to our online database and has now been amended:

    Aircraftman 1st Class DEVLIN, MICHAEL
    Unit: 4023 A.A. Flight, R.A.F. Regt.
Regiment: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
    Service No: 1504358
    Age: 20
Date of Death: 8 March 1943
Commemoration: KNOCKMOYLE (ST. MARY) ROMAN CATHOLIC CEMETERY
Additional Information: Son of James and Mary Jane Devlin, of Knockmoyle.

I have also taken this opportunity to attach a report listing all references to RAF Regt. in our records.

I hope this is of interest. "

Included was an attachment of 401 Raf Regt men in a spread sheet, I can forward this on to anyone interested, might save you pulling out the information yourself.

The list strangely does not include Curry or Aungier but does have Good, listed as A. A. Flight so I'll notify them of him at least. I'll check see if its still tht way.

They mailed again to say that these changes will be visible after some website maintenance they are doing, so if you look now on the website it won't be visible. I hope this is not the fancy new layout they went with a few months ago.
