Default 2Lt J.G. von TANGEN (RNoAF)

    Hello all,

The above pilot was posted missing on 31.10.43 during a recce mission (168 Sqn). He is reported to be Norwegian in the ORB and seems to have been killed during the mission.

The problem is that this pilot cannot be found in CWGC site, but this is not unusual for Foreigners or his spelling is not correct. In some sources his name is written VAN TANGEN like the Dutch or South Africans but in the ORB it is clearly written VON TANGEN.

So if anyone can bring more details about him it would be nice.

    Thanks in advance

    Phil

As a Norwegian it would be an exception if he appeared on the CWGC.

    Hi Phil,

Jan G von Tangen could be the man you are looking for. His name appears on a memorial in Norway. You can find a photograph ot it at this link:-

    Hope that helps

    Hello,

In the Combat & Casualties - RAF & US Fighter Commands 1943 by Tony Wood, the reason for the loss is mentioned to be flak at Dol-de-Bretagne.

    Mustang (P-51) FD554 from 168 Sqn.

    Regards

According to the ORB, F/O Clifton-Mogg saw the Mustang bank steeply to the left and lose height before impacting the ground for no apparent reason. No flak or enemy action was seen by Clifton-Mogg.

Would the Germans, or the French, investigate a crash like this, and if so, where will that report be now? I'm interested in finding the plane's individual code letter but von Tangen's log book has gone missing.

Sorry, but I don't have his N service number.

At this point in time, the Army Co-op squadrons had stopped using the squadron codes, identifying the individual planes by a single letter only.

He was repatriated and re-interred at Vestre Gravlund, Oslo, on 9th. September 1946.
