    Default 421025 - Unaccounted airmen - 25-10-1942

    What were the places of death registration for:

    A - Died on active service:
    AC2 Edgar B. BEDFORD - 1466854;
    AC1 Robert BELL - 1560565 - 2744 Sqn (RAF Regt);
    AC2 Albert H.T. CLEMENTS - 1633897;
    AC2 John H. WALL - 1664825, and
    LAC Conrad R. WEIGHT - 615198.

    B - Killed on active service:
    Sgt (Obs/Radar) Denis T.E. MASSEY - 1397540;
    F/Lt (Pilot) Charles F.C. RIDOUT - 47096 (looking for unit number; registered Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire [RAF Halton Hospital ?]), and
    F/O (Flight P/O) Peter F. SMITH - 123022.

    C - Not found in Flight archives:
    AC2 Ivor G. HOOK - 1039153 - age 32;
    AC2 Frederick H. JOHNSON - 1240639, and
    F/Lt Malcolm MACNEAL - 89426.

    D - Proposed aircraft losses:
    Beaufighter I - V8260 - 141 Sqn - shot down by fighter near Littlehampton, Sussex.
    Botha I - L6186 - 8 AGS - overshot landing Evanton.
    Hind Trainer - L7240 - ATA - crashed on approach Luton.
    Defiant I - AA284 - 277 Sqn - crashed on approach Stapleford Tawney.
    Havoc I - BB898 - 51 OTU - crashed on take-off at night near Fox & Hounds Inn, Clapham, Bedfordshire.
    Master II - EM338 - GIS - crashed on take-off Thame.

    AC2 Edgar B. BEDFORD - 1466854 - Romsey, Hampshire
    AC1 Robert BELL - 1560565 - 2744 Sqn (RAF Regt) - There is a 20 year old registed in Folkestone which seems the best fit.
    AC2 Albert H.T. CLEMENTS - 1633897 - Aylesbury (RAF Hospital or in EM338)
    AC2 John H. WALL - 1664825 - A 41 year old is registered in Manchester
    LAC Conrad R. WEIGHT - 615198 - not in Eng/Wales, possibly Botha I, L6186
    Sgt (Obs/Radar) Denis T.E. MASSEY - 1397540 - Bedford, Havoc BE898
    F/Lt (Pilot) Charles F.C. RIDOUT - 47096 - he was flying Master II, EM338
    F/O (Flight P/O) Peter F. SMITH - Bedford, Havoc BE898
    AC2 Ivor G. HOOK - 1039153 - age 32 - Ware, Hertfordshire
    AC2 Frederick H. JOHNSON - 1240639 - Christchurch, Hampshire
    F/Lt Malcolm MACNEAL - 89426 - Fylde, He was found with a gunshot wound to the head in a boarding house on Blackpool Promenade and later died in hospital. A verdict of suicide was returned at the inquest on 2 Nov 1942.

    Thanks Malcolm for this valuable and much appreciated info. CLEMENTS and WEIGHT both DOAS and probably may not have been involved in a flying accident.

    There is a Conrad R Wright age 24 registered in Cambridge in Q4. I'd guess this is our airman Weight.

    Didn;t find the three mens status'.

    AC2 Ivor G. HOOK - 1039153 - died from natural causes aged 34 at County Sanatorium, Ware. He was a milk roundsman before enlistment.

    Hi Henk,

    F1180 for Havoc BB898 confirms Smith as pilot and gives 3 killed, 0 injured

    So including MASSEY one more fatality to find for this aircraft.

    Ross,
    Don't have a third fatality (KOAS) on my unaccounted list for 25-10-1942; the third member may have died of wounds at a later date.

    AC2 Edgar B. BEDFORD - 1466854 - the National Probate Calendar records that he died at Middle Wallop.
