    Default AUS414561 Sgt N T E HEWITT RAAF - Bale-out.

    Hello All,

On an unknown date, but prior to 11-6-1943, AUS414561 Sgt (Air Gunner) Neville Thomas Eric HEWITT RAAF, baled out of a No.150 Sqn Wellington over North Africa. Hewitt was rescued 6-7 days later by an Allied patrol. He received a Military Medal for his efforts (LG: 11-6-43 p.2680).

I know of Hewitt's undigitised files at the NAA, and the AWM photograph - AWM: UK0731.

Can someone pin down the loss date of the 150 Sqn Wellington and the fate of the rest of the crew?

    All assistance appreciated,

    Col.

    Henk,

    Thanks for the listing.

I suspect my man Hewitt might have been on one these aircraft (HF668 - HF629 or DF729).

    Thursday, 14 January, 1943.

After dark RAF bombers were again in the air. Wellingtons of 150 Squadron taking off at 1740 to attack Bizerta. During the return flight the aircraft flew into a rainstorm, one crew being forced to bale out, while a second bomber force-landed on the seashore near Djidjelli.

    Col,
Thanks for info on HE603 and its crew. I had DF697 and crew and also the names of 9-5-1943 on the Malta Memorial. Can't find a matching serial 150 Sqn for 9th of May. Is it possible that 150 Sqn had a Wellington on loan from another squadron or 150 Sqn gave a crew on loan to another squadron ? F.i.:
9-5-1943 - 104 Sqn - W5418 - missing Cap Bonne (one name on file: P/O (Ag) Gordon H. DUNN - RCAF J/17420, buried Enfida War Cemetery, Tunisia).
9/10-5-1943 - 40 Sqn - HF794 - crashed in Lake Rherra (where ever this may be) - not in my files.
    9/10-5-1943 - 142 Sqn - HZ200 - abandoned near Montcalm - not in my files.
    Regards,
    Henk.

    Henk,

    Re: 9/10-5-1943 - 40 Sqn - HF794 - crashed in Lake Rherra.

I have checked David Gunby's 'Sweeping the Skies', he has no 40 Sqn loss on this date!

    and...

    9-5-1943 - 104 Sqn - W5418 - missing Cape Bon.

123309 F/O (Pilot) Leonard William VINDEN RAFVR +
196515 Sgt (Pilot) Harold STRIPP RAFVR +
656792 Sgt (Nav.) John JONES RAF +
1291501 Sgt (W.Op./Air Gnr.) John William George REEVE RAFVR +
J/17240 P/O (Air Gnr.) Gordon Henry DUNN RCAF +
1194050 Sgt (Air Gnr.) Jack FLUX RAFVR +

All buried Enfidaville War Cemetery. Coll. grave IV. E. 20-22

Thanks Col for info on crew W5418. Is it possible that 105 Sqn crew Sgt George COOPER et all, Malta Memorial, were missing on HZ200 on loan from 104 Sqn.

    Henk.

Took off Fontaine Chaude, detailed to bomb the harbour at Trapani. Crashed at Trapani and exploded. Two bodies were found in the wreckage, but their graves could not be located post-war. All are therefore commemorated on the Malta Memorial.
