Default F/L Geoffrey Charles Matheson 39363

Trawling through BoBT&N Mk V I came acros what appears to be an anomoly

30/8/40 222 Squadron Spitfire P9443 crash-landed near Sittingbourne following combat with Bf 109's 6.10 pm F/L GC Matheson seriously injured. A/c a write off.

30/9/40 222 Squadron Spitfire ????? Shot up by Bf 109 and crash-landed near Sittingbourne Paper Mills 5.45 pm. A/c later exploded. F/L GC Matheson unhurt. A/c a write-off.

Hornchurch Scramble records only Matheson's crash on the 30th August

MotBoB records the two crashes as above. However due to the similarity of the dates and locations I wonder if there has been a duplicated entry of the 30th August incident. There is also the matter of 'seriously wounded' to consider, is it likely that the officer would be so swiftly returned to duty?

Has anyone established the facts please.

    regards

I can't help with the two crashes but he seems to have returned to duty because he made a claim for a 109 (destroyed) on the 30th Sept at 13.45 over South West London (as listed in Fighter Command Victory Claims 1939-40)

MATHESON and 222 Sqn Spitfire 30-9-1940 may have been P9492 (Air Britain Aeromilitaria: shot down by fighter near Denham, Bucks.)

thanks for your contributions. I am tending towards the view that the 30 September entry is indeed a duplication of that of the 30 August. Steve's biog. of Matheson makes no mention of it. P9492 at Denham was the a/c of 102960 I Hutchinson, who was injured. John Foreman's reliable FCWD notes just the one Cat E incident for 222S on 30th September, with one pilot wounded. However Denham seems a long way from the action in which, at the time of this incident; early afternoon, the raiders were engaged mostly over Kent and SE London. Hornchurch Scramble describes Hutchinson's loss as follows, "was forced to bale out of his Spitfire, when his fuel tank was hit by machine gun fire, but from where it came he had no idea. He landed safely but was badly burned about the face and hands, as well as heavily bruised after hitting the tail of the a/c whilst baling out. He played no further part in the BoB."
