    Default Plug Patrol

    G'day Chaps

Can anyone explain to me what a 'Plug Patrol' is. This is in reference to the loss of a Beaufort Mk. I from No. 39 Squadron in the Middle East.

    Cheers...Chris

"The Winged Bomb" by Ken Delve is a history of 39Sqn. On page 68 it reads:

"However to return to September (1941) at Wadi Natrun. 39Sqn...commenced operation Plug. This was the code name given to sea reconnaissance sorties carried out in search of enemy supply ships and was carried out twice a day by two a/c flying on parallel courses. Such sorties were needed because Axis shipping was suspected of trying to avoid the a/c based in Malta by sailing towards SW Greece and then turning South for a dash for Benghazi."
