Default Position of moon, 8/9 August '44, N France, 00:05 hrs

    Hello All,

I've a combat report for a Mossie crew who had difficulty tracking a contact near the beachhhead on the date and at the time above, because their target was flying towards the moon.

Does this imply a course Northeast? Southwest? Other?

I am fully out of my depth on this one.

    TIA,

    Mark

    Mark,

Not sure how much help this is, but for the Caen area the moon rose at 21.58 GMT on the 8th and set at 10.54 GMT on the 9th. Moon transit (by which I assume it was at it's maximum elevation) was at 3.28 GMT on the 9th. I don't have a program that gives the position of the moonrise/moonset relative to a particular place, but if the contact was made before 03.28 GMT I'd suggest the moon's bearing was towards the southeast.

It was a waning, threequarter moon.

    Gents,

A user on another board pointed me here:

    http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/

Great little app which automatically prepares star charts for any time & place one chooses.

It confirms the moon was low in the E-SE in the case I'm after.
