    Default Gardening Operation

    Good evening,

I am trying to find more infos concerning the Gardening operation, 30/31.07.1943. It was a sea mining operation, around Frisian Islands, Friesische Inseln in German.

I know that at least one Lancaster from 61st Sqn. took part to this mission. Do you know more, please?

    Marco,

I have a feeling you have an incorrect date, as on the 30/31 July 1943 quote:- 8 aircraft laid mines in the Frisian Islands without loss - unquote.

The Bomber Command War Diaries by Martin Middlebrook & Chris Everitt, Pg. 415.

Best of luck in your search, and all the best to you and yours for Christmas and the New Year.

    Hi Arthur,

Thank you. I am reading the operative records of a single Lancaster bomber, LM339. It state that this plane deployed sea mines off the Frisian Islands, on the 30-31 July 1943. I did not know that only 8 planes took part to this mission.

Is it possible to know which planes and Sqns participated?

    Have a nice Xmas night!

    Marco,

By the way, your Lancaster LM339 of 61 Squadron you mentioned was lost Milan 7/8 August 1943.

    Dear Arthur,

You right. I may explain better my problem, I suppose.

The plane I am looking for on several books, archives and forums was the Lancaster LM339 from 61st Sqn., Syerston, lost over Milan, as you know.
The problem is that I have a book here, stating it participated to all these raids:

27-28 Jul. 1943, Gomorrah (Hamburg), his first raid.
29-30 Jul. 1943, Gomorrah, his second raid.
    30. Jul., Gardening, first minelaying, Frisian Islands.
    31 Jul, Gardening, second minelaying.
02-03 Aug. 1943, Gomorrah, third raid.
07-08 Aug. 1943, Milan, his last raid. He was shot down over Milan.

Now, other historical sources like Lost Bombers,

    http://www.lostbombers.co.uk/bomber.php?id=891

    confirm the LM339 over Hamburg:

"LM339 was delivered to 61 Squadron 21Jul43. LM339 took part in the Key Operations against Hamburg 27/28Jul43 and Hamburg 2/3Aug43."

But I still haven't found infos concerning Gardening.
And there are also some problems with the other dates, as you may see. In my mind, too many operations in too few days. And you? What do you think?
I still have to look in the Chorley papers. I have not this book, now.

    Thanks,

    Marco

I have only just found your thread but I can confirm that the 199 Squadron ORB indicates that six aircraft operated to the Frisian Islands on 30-31/7/1943.

    Marco,
"Too many operations in too few days". Bear in mind that the aircraft (LM 339) may have taken part in all these operations but not necessarily with the same crew on each trip. There is some doubt in my mind whether this aeroplane was engaged in the raid on Hamburg on 29/30th July as I cannot find mention of it for that raid.

    Default Lm339

    Thanks everybody,

In effect, I have no news about this. I suppose that the plane could took part to all these missions, with several different crews, but there are no evidences.

I carefully studied the planes which took part to the Gardening mission I was looking for, and this bomber does not appear.
