Quite possibly a specialist from the Y Service as an extra crew member. 'Y Service' was the name of the Allied intelligence gathering organisation responsible for listening to Axis transmissions, and included German speakers who, among other things, tuned in to the plain language transmissions that occurred in operational situations, such as directing nightfighters. Does this fit with the situation in your fathers squadron?
