Default 224 Sqdn - AA Escort (force 231)

    Hi All,

I am currently researching a log book and one of the entries for June 10th 1941 has the duty as AA Escort (Force 231). Does anyone know what Force 231 was?

He also has AA + AS Escort EC49, SC37, OS.3, HG70 etc.....I presume these were all convoys and AS being anti submarine but what was AA, anti aircraft?

    Thanks in advance,

    Russ

    Hi,

The prefix "Force" means that the convoy consisted mostly of RN/RCN etc vessels as opposed to one of Mercantile Marine vessels with an armed escort.

As to the Mercantile Convoy prefix:

EC - Southend to Clyde, Loch Ewe or Oban (non stop)
SC - Sydney, Cape Breton to UK
OS - UK to West Africa including sections to West Indies and South Atlantic Ports. Also indicate Liverpool sections before r/v with other sections. (C)(M)(O)(U) after OG, ON, OS convoys denotes Clyde, Milford Haven, Oban and Loch Ewe sections.
    HG - Gibraltar to UK

    Regards
    Ross

The codes you quoted are all convoy names. It might help to know what they are:

EC -- Southend to Oban via Firth of Forth
SC -- Halifax Slow to United Kingdom
    OS -- Liverpool to Freetown
HG -- Gibraltar to United Kingdom

AS was anti-submarine and AA was Anti-Aircraft, although it wasn’t used in that context often.

Force 231 is a name that would be given to a naval group on a set mission, perhaps a flotilla or an ad hoc group working together. As a guideline, if the group contained capital ships it would have probably had a letter instead of a numeric indicator (such as Force H, Force Z etc.) It would be necessary to know date/place before narrowing it down, as there is no ‘force register’ that I have ever found (and I have looked).

    Hope this helps,

    Bruce

    Try this site at naval-history.net:-

    http://www.naval-history.net/xDKWW2-4106-33JUN01.htm

It's the day-by-day list of naval operations, from/ to, involving ??? ships.
You might try to match something geographically with what's listed in your books.
Just scroll down to the date. It was quite a busy day for the rum runners.
Nothing listed specifically for your force 231 though.

    Thanks for that Stewart,

This pilot flew some 55 operational sorties and often mentions some of the ships he was looking for plus the convoys he was meeting/escorting. As you can see this website is proving very useful indeed...this was a busy time of the war for our convoys!

    Cheers again,

    Hi Russ

you'll probably find this useful too:

    http://www.convoyweb.org.uk/

Use "Convoy finder" and enter the code. I've found details of the convoys in the one's you've listed. Should match the ships he's mentioned.
