    Default G/C B V Robinson DSO,DFC & Bar AFC

    Hi All,

This airman was killed on an operation to Berlin on the night of 23/24 August 1943 with 35 Sqn. Was he the higest ranking airman killed with bomber command on an operation ?

    Thanks,

    John.

    John,

Of the three, Pleasance would appear to have been the most senior:

    From the Jan 1936 AFL:

    Robinson - Plt Off 1.9.34
    McKechnie - Flt Lt 14.6.35
    Pleasance - Flt Lt 9.9.31

John, I thought Guy Gibson was a Group Captain but Wikipedia has him Wing Commander and I'm sure they are correct.

It was worth reading the whole item because they say that for many years it was thought that he had been shot down while Master Bomber in a Mosquito. When the plane was discovered it was found that there was a fault with the fuel tank selector and it was this that caused the crash.

Best read the Morris book on Guy Gibson to find out the truth - near total lack of experience on type, navigator no experience on type. Interesting that Wikipedia has an answer for a plane which was so badly damaged that the crew were identified by a sock and remains of a shirt collar.
