    Henk

Martin is likely to have been on the Defiant, Helmsley is in Rydale's administration.

Henk, I confirm Martin was on Defiant N3458.

I dont like advertising my site, but details are at.. http://www.yorkshire-aircraft.co.uk/aircraft/planes/42/n3458.html

Is anyone able to say why "Raskelf" is quoted. Raskelf is a small village about 3 miles west of Easingwold, where as the crash location of Cold Kirby is some 10 miles north of Easingwold.

The Q site was on a large flat grassy area at the top of Sutton Bank, and between Sutton Bank and Cold Kirby.

    regards Rich

A point here is that the remaining RAF man from 1474 Flight, P/O Peter A. ACKERNLEY - 109094 is listed on CWGC with the FLight number under his unit, the other RAF men have no unit listed. It is sad that all these other men had this procedure used. Geoff Sullivans search engine shows up a possible 15 airmen with 'Flights' listed as their unit:

001 ACKERNLEY PR 109094 1474 FLIGHT 18/12/1942 ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE
002 CAPP J 1394911 1483 TECHNICAL TRAINING FLIGHT 24/05/1942 ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE

    012 HOLLIDAY W 992991 1602 FLIGHT 09/08/1943 ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE
013 SHARP TC 1874201 6225 BOMB DISPOSAL FLIGHT 07/06/1944 ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE
014 STOTT H 1534309 6225 BOMB DISPOSAL FLIGHT 07/06/1944 ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE
015 VERYARD SD 1169055 NO 6228 BOMB DISPOSAL FLIGHT 01/09/1944 ROYAL AIR FORCE VOLUNTEER RESERVE

Same serach returns nothing for the Commonwealth forces and the Search term FLT turns up a 7 returns that are a mixed bag that I think are errors mainly.

    Dennis,

Met(eorological) Flights were discrete units - some werer later upgraded to squadron status. Re the 1404 Met Flight names in your first list - that was Hudson F/1404 which failed to return from an EPICURE sortie (EPICURE being the name of a met reconnaissance track southwestwards from St Eval).

Culley of 1403 Met Flight in your second list is a bit of a mystery at the moment as the unit was operating with Blemheims at the time and no second crew member appears to be listed. Unless someone knows the answer I'll make some enquires.

Thats the point I'm making Brian, there are very few personell listed with Flights, AFU's Air Schools, OTU's etc.

The upgrade to Sqdn status has no bearing on the 1474 crew I refer to above, why should only one of the crew be given his unit name, similar to the procdure that results is few RAAF men having a unit listed in CWGC. Unfortunate discision or policy.
