Default “Dog Tags” - Identification of Religion

    Hello,

I am having some interest to read the WW II “Dog Tags”. We have C of E = Church of England or CE for same.

We have OD = Other Denomination introduced in 1942.

But what about Church of Scotland, could it be CS? Then we have the Roman Catholic Church, could it be RC or C?

Then I have read about the Hebrew religion, where the RCAF are having J = Jewish, H = Hebrew and HEB = Hebrew.

    Meth = Methodist.

I would like to learn more about the many letters and the connection to the religions of Commonwealth airmen.

    Regards

These are the ones that were used in the army, and I believe they were the same for the air force:

    Bapt - Baptist
    CE - Church of England
    CI - Church of Ireland
    Cong - Congregationalist
    CSci - Christian Scientist
    J - Jewish
    Meth - Methodist
    PB - Plymouth Bretheren
Pres - Church of Scotland and Presbyterian
    Q - Quaker
    RC - Roman Catholic
    SA - Salvation Army
    U - Unitarian
    blank - other or none

    Argus/Amrit,
My dog-tags (issued early 50's) show me as being 'C E'. If, however, you wrote 'Agnostic' in the space for Religion on your Big Locker bed-card then you could then claim to be an Other Denomination when it came to Church Parade (basically a C of E event). Thus, when the Command was given "RCs, Jews, and ODs - Fall Out!" you could march, in an upright and military fashion, behind 1 Hangar to have a fag whilst the C of E Padre droned on. I got caught out when the SWO did a Surprise Billet Inspection. He looked at my Bed-Card and said "There ain't no such Religion - put 'im down as C of E". I had to do every Church Parade after that!! You can have no idea how a Friday night night-duty was sought after so that you could put a notice on your mosquito-net "Sleeping off nights"!!
HTH (but only those who've done it will know what I'm talking about!!)

    Hello to both of you,

Very interesting details to learn about, from a person with the letter P!

    Best regards
