    Default Buried at Sea

Recently came across several accounts of RAF servicemen being buried at sea, according to their NOK wishes. Like AVM C.D BREESE CB AFC died in Hudson crash 5/3/1941 buried at sea commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Does anyone have any info on numbers or the procedure. I'm wondering how common this was in wartime !

    TIA

At least one Coastal Command aircrewman had his ashes scattered at sea by aircraft on an operaional flight.

Some sea burials of men who died ashore were undertaken by the AS/R launch crews.

A number of others had their bodies recovered by RN vessels and then consigned to the deep after any identification marks were recorded.
