    Default Mission markings

    Hi guys

most of us have seen many pics of bombers with mission tallies. Tallies for the number of missions that that particular aircraft had undertaken. But what about crew tallies? Were they ever marked up anywhere, except on the Squadron crew boards? Fighter pilots had their kills on their aircraft and these were transfered to which ever aircraft they flew over time.

    cheers

    Hi Amrit,

I have never heard about such a thing. At 311 Sq (our only bomber) always the mission tallies were of the plane not of the crew. On the other hand the crews at ourt squadrons were very unstable and with many changes in short periods.

The same was later when sumbarine attackes were painted. On Liberators there were no mission tallies at all.

There were several lists during the world where the tallies were recorded, sometimes with exact dates, sometimes only totals.

So your ideas it will mean to choose if the tallies will be of the captain otherwise the plane will became like colouring book if all crewmembers will put their tallies on its fuselage:-)

I have an example of a 'crew tally' in an Officer's notebook, but it is a one off and I have never seen the like before (in any form).

Many, if not most of the crews I have looked at did not end up flying together on every op. Substitutions were not uncommon due to sickness, injury, or a manpower shortage on another crew. The crew my father did his first tour with only ended up with two or three of them with the same number of ops when they were screened. Three of them had been wounded at one time or another and most of them filled in with other crews at least once.

    Default Crew tallies

    Hi Amrit

Dave's right. It wouldn't be possible to log crew tallies on an a/c (leaving aside fighter a/c, which aren't my specialism) as crews will have flown different a/c as they worked through their tour, and the composition of the crew itself will more likely than not have varied due to injuries, sickness, leave, attendance on courses, or for whatever other reason.

To see this you can look through a bomber squadron ORB and either see which crews flew a particular plane, or look at a particular pilot and see which planes he flew and who was in his crew on each occasion.

Hence there would be no such thing as a 'crew' tally, and certainly not one that could be recorded on an a/c and transferred over from plane one to another if the crew moved on. The only meaningful tallies would be those that were recorded - those flown by the a/c, painted on its side, or personal ones in an individuals own personal log book.

    Cheers guys

I didn't think there were crew markings, and the explanations as to why have been very interesting.
