    Default 421222 - Unaccounted airmen - 22-12-1942

    Looking for info (cause of death, death registration) on:

    Sgt (Pilot) George A. BENSON - 1330799 - DOWOIROAS (Died of wounds or injuries received on active service) - death registered Sleaford, Lincolnshire.

    AC2 Thomas J. FLETCHER - 1659070 - age 32 - RAF Regt - DOAS.

    LAC John F. MERRISON - 928709 - 959? (Balloon) Sqn - DOWOIROAS - his wife Gladys Doreen Merrison was killed in the same incident (air raid ?).

    AC1 Richard C. OWEN - 1483664 - 911 (Balloon) Sqn (West Bromwich) - DOAS.

    F/O (Pilot/Instr.) Thomas OWEN-JONES - 108573 - DOAS.

    LAC (Pilot u/t) Gordon D. PATERSON - 1335358 - KOAS - death registered Sleaford, Lincolnshire (connection to Sgt Benson ?).

    Proposed aircraft losses:
    Blenheim I - L4872 - 51 OTU - crashed in forced landing Wood End, Marston Mortaine, Bedfordshire.
    Typhoon I - R8872 - 257 Sqn - crashed in forced landing Exeter.
    Master II - DL959 - RAFC - crashed in forced landing near Digby.
    Master II - DL112 - RAFC - crashed in forced landing at night S of Barkston LG.

    PEARSON, Sgt. (Radio/Obs) RANDAL GEORGE, 1339699. RAFVR. 23rd December 1942. Age 20. Son of Randal and Florence Pearson, of Fulwood, Sheffield.
    Killed when Blenheim L4872 (Mk IV) of 51 OTU (Cranfield) lost height and crashed at Wood End, Marston at 22.10hrs, following engine failure after take-off from Cranfield.
    His pilot, 1336190 Sgt (Plt) William Desmond Patrick Hindle, RAFVR, of Lea, Preston is buried at Accrington Cemetery, Lancashire.

    LAC JOSEPH F. MERRISON - 928709 - 959? (Balloon) Sqn - DOWOIROAS - his wife Gladys Doreen Merrison was killed in the same incident (air raid ?).

    Both Gladys and Joseph are registered in Yarmouth district, her age is given as 19 on the register, 22 by CWGC. A number of civilians died in Great Yarmouth District on this date.

    AC1 Richard C. OWEN - 1483664 - 911 (Balloon) Sqn (West Bromwich) - DOAS. registered West Bromwich Staffordshire

    F/O (Pilot/Instr.) Thomas OWEN-JONES - 108573 - DOAS. I could not find him anywhere, confused myself greatly

    Thanks all for your help.

    Dennis/Malcolm: CWGC has no "T.O. JONES" as a casualty for this date and may this have been the "T. OWEN-JONES" looking for.

    Pavel: HINDLE and PEARSON's death registered CWGC as 23-12-1942; they may have been injured in the accident and died after midnight.

    For Benson and Paterson, the registration district is more correctly, SLEAFORD & EAST KESTEVEN REGISTRATION DISTRICT, and this does contain the place, Digby, liekly for Master DL959 - RAFC

    Hi Henk,

    Benson and Patterson were both killed on DL112

    DL959 is recorded as 23rd with no injury to pilot LAC S A N Peiris.
