WILSON, Granville, F/O, DFC, DFM (141094, Royal Air Force) - No.7 Squadron - Distinguished Service Order - awarded as per London Gazette dated 5 November 1943. Born in Belfast, 1921; home there. Educated at Belfast Methodist College and Queens University. Enlisted 1940; commissioned 1943. Awarded DFM on 18 May 1943, DFC 7 September 1943. Killed in action with No.7 Squadron, 6 September 1944. Cited with Flight Sergeants B.N. Mulholland and W.F.W. Porteous. He reported received his DSO, DFC and DFM at a single investiture, November 1943. Killed 6 September 1944 with No.9 Squadron.

This officer and airmen were pilot, air gunner and air bomber respectively of an aircraft detailed to attack Hanover one night in September 1943. On the run up to the target, the bomber was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Four members of the crew were wounded, and much essential equipment was rendered unserviceable. In spite of this, Flying Officer Wilson resolutely held to his course, enabling Flight Sergeant Porteous to execute a successful bombing attack. On leaving the target, the bomber was intercepted by a fighter which attacked with great persistence. Nevertheless, Flying Officer Wilson succeeded in evading the fighter, being greatly assisted by Flight Sergeant Mulholland who kept his captain fully informed of the attacker's movements. On the return flight, Flight Sergeant Porteous assumed the duties of navigator and executed his task with skill. These members of aircraft crew displayed great courage, skill and tenacity in the most trying circumstances.

My uncle also flew with Wilson on 7 Squadron, and was killed with him on their last mission.

From his log book (all with 7 Squadron, from Oakington):
    27.8.44 1700 Lancaster "D" Observer Air Test
    28.8.44 1230 Lancaster "S" Observer Cross Country
28.8.44 1845 Lancaster "S" Observer Op1 Doodle Bug Base (Deputy Master)
    29.8.44 1500 Lancaster "D" Observer Air Test
    29.8.44 2100 Lancaster "D" Observer Op2 Stettin (Visual Centerer)
31.8.44 1100 Lancaster "R" Observer Cross Country and Blind Bombing
    1.9.44 17:45 Lancaster "D" Observer Cross Country (Y training)
3.9.44 1600 Lancaster "C" Observer Op3 Venlo drome Holland (Deputy Master)
    5.9.44 1145 Lancaster "O" Observer Air test
5.9.44 1540 Lancaster "Q" Observer Air test and Blind Bombing
    6.9.44 Lancaster "Q" Emden - missing

If anyone can enlighten me as to the role of a "Visual Centerer" and what "Y training" was, I'd be grateful!

    Hi Bob,

'Y' Training is H2S Radar training the ground scanning radar housed in a blister in the aircrafts rear fuselage. It is a blind bombing device allowing bombing through thick cloud cover. Aircrew needed much practice to be able to interupt the radar information successfully.

My mother is Granville Wilson's cousin. She is still alive and lives in Belfast. Granville is still fondly remembered by his family and his photograph - taken outside Buckingham Palace following his investiture, I believe - hung for many years in my grandmother's house.

Several years ago I was lucky enough to obtain some information about his last flight but the information posted on this forum is most welcome.

I would be very interested to hear more from peters1956 and Willywombat.

    Hi all,

My grandfather W.B Hawkins - Flight Engineer, flew with Wilson on numerous occasions. Mark has previously provided me with some wonderful information (thanks again Mark, hope you are well).

I'd love to know if anyone has some crew photos or piccies of JA911-Q.

    Cheers
