    Default F/L Ivor Brian Hayes.

Looking for information on this airman who was apparently seconded to the RAF as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. I have two possible Service Numbers from the LG, 126715 and 48827. Would be particularly interested in confirmation as to whether or not he received the DFC and citation for same if he did. I am aware of the loss of his aircraft, Lancaster PB564 and the fate of the crew. My interest has been aroused in that I have the telegram from the family of F/L Hayes confirming he is a prisoner to the the family of W/O Clayton who evaded.

    Any information most appreciated.

    Regards,

Carter has DFC to Hayes, Ivor Brian FL (48827) RAF 635 Sqn gazetted 14/11/1944:5206.

    No citation given.

My PoW list records him as PoW
    http://www.rafcommands.com/Air%20Force%20PoWs/RAF%20POWs%20Query%20H_1.html

No camp or PoW number so it was late 1944 that he appears in the listings.

    Regards

    Thanks Ross.

With 635 being a Pathfinder Squadron and Chorley recording the possibility that he had flown 53 operations at the time of his loss in January 1945 would it be too much of a stretch to suspect the DFC was for completing the first 30?

There is a detailed book about the Squadron whose title I can't remember which I believe details every operation, but at 60 I'm afraid it is way outside my price range.

There is an excellent possibility that the recommendation for his DFC (complete with sortie list) with be found at the National Archives (Kew) in Air 2/8828.

In the event that you or a person acting on your behalf examines this file, I would be grateful if copies could also be made of the DFC recommendations for Vivian Thomas Woods (No.405 Squadron) and James Paul Howard (No.139 Squadron), both RCAF whose awards were gazetted 10 November 1944. I have brief texts but the original submissions would be welcomed, especially if they have sortie lists.
