Default 581153 Sgt (TOM ?) Willoughby HARTLEY KIA 9/7/40 21 Sqn

I have a query with 581153 Sgt Willoughby HARTLEY KIA 9/7/40 21 Sqn age 20. The RAF Overseas War Deaths 1939-1948 lists him as TOM Willoughby HARTLEY. I've tried to find his birth details without any success.

    Any thoughts.

    TIA

    Default Confusion

My colleague Ivan who does a lot of 1st world war research tells me that it is quite a common thing in that era for people to be recorded by the names they called themselves rather than their actual birth names. In some cases they had records in both.... I suppose this could be the same in WW2 could it not?

    Hi Martyn & Dee,

Thanks for the help. I believe in this case his missing first name Tom is probably down to a clerical error. I do know of people who joined up under assumed names, but I believe the name Tom comes from service record hence the mention in the RAF Overseas War Deaths 1939-1948.

    Thanks again
