    Hi,

Adrian I have some raid codes fro raids but from the earlier stage of war 1940-41 but I have not identified all of the towns. I also knows that they have changed several times during the war.

    Default Raid Codes?

    Hi Adrian

Could you just clarify please what you mean by "raid codes"? In what context were these used?

As Pavel has said, early in the war there were codes for different targets: "M434", "D52" and the like, while later on I'm aware that different code names (names of fish) were used for German towns as BC raid targets.

Or is it something else you mean?

    Adrian,

I think you are after something like this:

    Bomber Command target code words:

From ‘Bomber Command’ by Max Hastings

    Berlin ------------ Whitebait
    Darmstadt ------- Luce
    Hamburg --------- Weaverfish
    Munich ---------- Catfish
    Nuremberg ------- Grayling

From ‘Air Battle of the Ruhr’ by Alan Cooper

    Bochum -------- Quinnat
    Dortmund ------ Sprat
    Duisburg ------- Cod
    Dusseldorf ------ Perch
    Essen ---------- Bullhead
    Gelsenkirchen --- Ferox
    Krefeld --------- Mahseer
    Mannheim ------ Chubb
    Mulheim -------- Steelhead
    Oberhausen ---- Gillaroo
    Wuppertal ------ Sprod

    From ‘Bomber’ by Len Deighton

    Cologne --------- Trout

From Soldier at Bomber Command by Charles Carrington

    Hanover --------- Eel

It's not a complete list, but I can say that all the codes were fish names.

I posted this elsewhere where the same question was asked but members here may find it useful (it fills in some of the gaps in Brian's list)

Thanks Amrit - I often wondered what the full list looked like. I believe the list was compiled by Saundby - a keen fisherman.

The list used to exist on another site, Brian, which is now defunct. At alieneyes prompting on another site where this same question was asked, I managed to track it down. The rest of the site seems to be packed with info, but being in German, it's a slow process trying to read it using google translate:

    http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amaot.de% 2Fbunker%2Fbunker13.htm&sl=de&tl=en

And yes, the codes were the idea of Saundby.

Mind you, even on my abbreviated list, I didn't at first believe the names were all species of fish.

That is a very interesting description of the raid as well.

Just what do you do in your spare time?
