Default 61 Sqn mission to Lorient 7 Feb 1943

Lancaster ED359 went down near Lorient on this date. Can anyone tell me the details of the mission? Was it a gardening op or bombing run? How many other a/c were lost?

I have the crew details, which include my subject F/Sgt. Herbert Dalton Lewis R/102653, RCAF.

    thanks.

    Dave,
It was a PFF led raid on Lorient. 7 aircraft were lost, 3 Lancs, 2 Halifaxes and 2 Wellingtons.

    Col,
For starters, losses in Chorley's show 44, 158, 166, 199 and 408sqdns being involved, 156sqdn ORB shows 6 a/c took part. Looking at the 61sqdn ORB it would appear that this was the Lewis crew's first op with the squadron after posting there on 15/01/43.

Oh my, Alan, I completely missed it...but I have an excuse - we're having a little party over here called the Olympics and with the time difference on the west coast, I've been up until past midnight for 14 days now.

(And Canada wins another gold! Tied with US and Germany now at 8.)

Thanks for the HCU detail too.

    Dave,
This was their first op with 61sqdn, they may have been on ops with another squadron before the CU, i notice that there was'nt the usual trip as 2nd Dickey for Lewis, for experience after joining 61sqdn.

Thanks Alan. I have just checked Lewis' personnel file, which was sitting in a stack of files I hadn't read through yet. It was his first op, he came straight through on the usual path but his file notes he was at both 1660 CU and 1661 CF, which seems odd. I will post a separate question on that one.
