    Default Altimeter ID

    Hi All,

    Another mystery item picked up by fishing net. Though this time at least we know what it is, we just don`t know the type of aircraft it was used in. Though A (Crown) M and number 6D/608 11065/42 Tell us it is British type, the gauge is odd in that it appears to go up in Thousands to 4000 feet then says Emergency. I will get a pic up in photobucket to refer to, but my guess is an early aircraft type, pre-1941.

    those markings and the marking of emergency points to an Oxygen Regulator rather than an altimeter.

    Also, I would expect an altimeter to have some means of setting the sea level barometric pressure. Don't see one here.

    Thanks Amrit,

    But the thing that got us was the word `ALT` normally used on altmeters, at the top of the gauge and `Thousands` and `FEET` at the bottom on the face of the gauge. if Oxygen then it must mean Tens of thousands of feet, because oxygen wouldn`t be needed at 4,000 feet. I was thinking perhaps an early seaplane or bi-plane?

    Just seen your post Bill. Yes! It certainly is an odd one this, can`t find any like it online or in books I have searched. As Amrit says that word Emergency is often associated with Oxy regulators and the like, even so I can find one of these like it either.

    Dave,

    I fully agree with Amrit - this will be gauge of Oxygen regulator.

    1. I have seen the British altimeter and your picture does not looks like one of those.
    2. I remember from general pilots notes that the oxygen was recommended to open at 10 000 feet - so I think it is the reason why there is 0 and than 10 000 as the first value on the scale.

    Spot on Amrit/Bill,

    I found one on google that is at the RAF museum,

    The photo caption reads:

    Mark XA (10A) Oxygen Flow Regulator Gauge, believed manufactured 1944, and now at the RAF Museum.

    We just need to find out the aircraft types that used this instrument now,Some possible types up there in Orkney in 1944 are Swordfish,Barracuda, Firefly, Albacore, Roc, Skua, Martinet,Fulmar,Spitfire,Seafire,Hurricane,Oxford, Walrus,Sea Otter.

    Any ideas guys?

    Great Dave!
    I would suggest that this one was made in 1942 according to the visible part .../42.
    So for the beginning I will exclude all crashes till the 1942 and also the biplanes...
