    Default Rank : ARE ? Service : RAFR ?

    Hi,

I have been asked to try to find information about a UK service man who vanished in WW2. I have some basic info :

    Alfred Benjamin Ness
    Rank RAE
    Service no. 1518398-2768
    Squadron of RAFR

However I'm not sure if this is correct, for example , assuming this is RAF, what rank is RAE ? I assume that RAFR is actually RAFVR ?

he is not listed on the CWWG or in any of the POW lists. Basically he did not return from WW2 and other than service records I wonder if any other options are open ?

    Many thanks

    Hi,

rank RAE is really strange as RAE means Royal Aircraft Establishment....

RAFR I suppose is RAF VR.

Also the Service No. seems to me a little bit strange..

This is not really my area of expertise, but might be worth a long shot.

2768 Squadron RAFR was an RAF Regiment squadron which would have been formed by transferring Army airfield defence personnel into the Regiment.

    Try http://www.rafweb.org/Regiment2.htm for more info

Thanks Allan , I think you are right. They have since clarified with this info

    rank as L.A.C - service number 1518398 - 2804 Squadron - R.A.F regiment - R.A.F Station, Gatow, Germany

So your RAF Regiment suggestion was right. maybe the second Squadron was after a transfer.

1518398 appears to be an RAFVR service number. I searched CWGC for numbers in the 1518XXX series and had three RAFVR hits:

    1518332 AC1 ASTON, Edward
    1518362 LAC JOHSON, Wallace
    1518375 AC1 BOWER, Leonard

But, just to muddy the waters a bit, searching on 1518XXX I also found several members of the Royal Artillery , all of them serving on Ant-Aircraft Batteries; one of them, Gnr. Albert HARDY having the identical service number to ASTON ,RAFVR above.

Thanks, so I think I'm looking for a leading Aircraft Man who ultimately was in 2804 squadron and never returned from the war. He's not posted as DIA , so I'm guessing he might have decided to remain in Berlin ?

    L.A.C - service number 1518398 - 2804 Squadron - R.A.F regiment - R.A.F Station, Gatow, Germany
