Default Spitfire AA804 - why FTR?

    Hi All

Can anyone tell me please why Spitfire AA804 failed to return from a PRU sortie to Dusseldorf and Essen on 28/12/1941? The pilot, P/O C P Hall was, I believe, one of the 50 shot after the Great Escape.

Just wondering why he didn't make it home that day in '41.

Oh, and what Mk of Spitfire was AA804 please?

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Regards

    Ian

    Hi Ian,

    To add to Ross' reply.

AA804 was delivered to 1 PRU on 07 Oct 41 and it appears that 28 Dec 41 was the aircraft's first operational sortie and Hall's third.

    Default Aa804

Thanks chaps. Just what I was after.

Andy: "AA804 was delivered to 1 PRU on 07 Oct 41 and it appears that 28 Dec 41 was the aircraft's first operational sortie and Hall's third." I hope he asked for his money back!

    :-)

ps Not being 'up' on Fighter-types, can you confirm where he'd taken off from? The ORB page isn't clear about this. Some other entries refer to sorties taking off from Benson, some say a/c took off from 'Base' (was that somewhere different?), but this one for Hall doesn't say anywhere at all.

    Hi Ian,

It appears that AA804 took off from Benson, though sorties from the satellite at Mount Farm were usually recorded as Benson. P/O Hall was a member of 'D' Flight but I don't know for sure if 'D' Flight was operating from Mount Farm or Benson proper at this time, I believe it was the latter.

Just to add to my last post.

'D' Flight was operating from Benson in Dec 41, it moved to Mount Farm during Jan 42.

    Hi Andy,

Yes I have Benson for this one but quite a few sorties included a top up at a local aerodrome before leaving the UK coast so take Benson as the leaving point and the intended final destination.

I've seen Station ORBs (Wick, Leuchars etc) that refer to a PRU landing, refuel and takeoff that does not appear in the 540/541 Sqn ORB which only lists the Benson Up and Down point for that aircraft sortie.
