Default Short Stirling crash at Wicken Bonhunt, Essex

I am looking for any information on a Stirling from an HCU that crashed near Wicken Bonhunt Essex.
I know where the aircraft came down, as I was involved in a partial recovery/site investigation back in 1981. What I have lost is the HCU number, crew names and the base it was flying from.
    Appreciate any help!

    Hi Denis,

I am going through Chorley's HCU losses, the only one I have found so far that crashed in Essex is Stirling LM565 of 1651 HCU which crashed at Wendens Ambo near Saffron Walden, Essexon the 14/15 July 1944 with the loss of the whole crew of eight.

    Regards,

    John.

    I agree with John on this one. There's only about 2 miles between Wendens Ambo and Wicken Bonhunt as the crow flies so either location could be given as the reference point. Chorley gives the crew as;

    F/Sgt D H Wilson RAAF
    Sgt J B Fairservice
    F/O P Davie
    Sgt W J Morgan
    F/Sgt H W Evans RAAF
    Sgt S Houston
    Sgt H L Williams
    Sgt M Wilkinson
Flying Officer Davie was on board as a "screened" navigator since the crew were on a "Bullseye" sortie. Apparently control was lost whilst banking at 3,000 feet and the aircraft spun in at approx 0330 hrs.
They had taken off from Wratting Common at 2245 hrs.
I have trawled through the individual aircraft histories in M. Bowyer's "The Stirling Story" and this would appear the only one that fits the bill.
    Best Regards,
    Bill.

Serial of the Stirling was LK565 (not LM565).

Thanks you, I can re-record all the details for my files.
I have another one but a seperate thread will be the place. Thanks chaps!
