    Default Martinet Loss HP138 118 Sqn 29.01.43

    Hello All,

Can anyone confirm the name of the TTO who lost his life in Martinet HP138 at Coltishall on the 29.01.43. Pilot F/Sgt DE COURCY, Thomas Joseph (J17641 / R67815) RCAF also injured in the accident.

    Any help, as always, appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Tim

    Tim,
Are you sure the TTO was killed ? I don't have an airman unaccounted for on this date in my files. Injured and died later ?
    Regards,
    Henk.

    Henk,

Andrew Thomas in his history of No.118 Squadron, "I KILL AND RETURN"*, seems pretty sure.

"Back at Coltishall a Martinet target tug held on squadron strength crashed on takeoff for a towing sortie badly injuring the pilot and killing the winch operator."

Like you I can't find a matching death.

    Henk,

I think you might be on to something, upon review of the AM Form 1180 the casualties are both recorded as injured. This has then been scored out and one fatal casualty recorded, as the aircraft burnt on the ground it is quite plausible that the winch operator died of his injuries at a later date following his rescue. As Col has pointed out there is no doubt that this incident caused fatal injuries to some poor soul.

    The search continues....

    Kind regards

    Tim

Geoff's Search Engine throws up only one RAF casualty from 118S for the month beginning 29/1/43, and that is 1179854 George Alexander CROALL on 24th Feb. I have not searched for Commonwealth etc.

    DaveW,

CROALL, missing on Rhubarb on 24-2-1943, in 118 Sqn Spitfire Vb EP123. FCL2/84.

    Hello All,

Sorry to resurrect this one but still struggling to identify the TTO. I have drawn a blank with the 118 and station ORB can anyone offer advice on trying to track him down?

    Kind regards,

    Tim
