    Default Hudson Loss 27-12-42

Looking for the serial of a Hudson of 233 Squadron which was lost on the 27-12-42. The crew, Sgt's Greaves, Brown, Evans and Griffin were all lost. Believed to have been shot down in a combat with a U Boat?

    Any help gratefully received.

    Regards,

    Kevin Mears.

Nothing in the U-boat archive for attack by this aircraft.

U-73 claimed a Hudson on that date, shot down while attacking the U-boat.

    Hope this helps,

Thanks to all for the extremely helpful responses.

The attack recorded by U-73 on a 500 Squadron Hudson on the same date is interesting. Piloted by a J Plugh, the aircraft ditched and all survived. Would anyone please be able to provide the serial to this aircraft, believed to have been coded 'M'?

All this interest is due to a photo and caption of an engine at the Museum in Madrid. This was posted on another forum I frequent. If the Administration will allow, I will add the link to that particular thread below.

Thanks again for all the help.

    Default Hudson - 500 Sqn - 27-12-1942

    Kevin,
Have only one Hudson of 500 Sqn lost 27-12-1942 and probably shot down while attacking a sub. This was Hudson V - serial AM689. Crew all on the Malta Memorial.
    F/Lt D.V. VARIAN - 89330
    Sgt E. WALKER - 1262359
    Sgt R.T. SOUTHCOTT - 932503
    Sgt F. McKENDRICK - RAAF 403201.

    Regards,
    Henk.

    Henk.

    Thanks for that.

U-73 reported the loss of a 500 Squadron machine coded 'M' on the same date piloted by a J Plugh and crew, all of whom were saved. Have you or anyone ever come across that name in connection with 500 Squadron or for that matter any unit flying Hudsons? It appears from a quick search on CWGC that the was not a casualty. Could the U Boat crew have got the date, Squadron or even type wrong?

Thanks again for all the help.

    Regards,

    Kevin Mears

    Hi Gents,

No.500 Sqn lost two aircraft on that day. Coded W and M

    M was AM698 crew:

    P/O J Pugh
    Sgt Broomfield
    F/Sgt Wilkins
    Sgt Emberson

Took off from Blida for a strike at 06;04 hrs.

This was the loss shot down by the U-73 at 08:15 hrs. All on board the Hudson were rescued.

A Hudson coded W (no serial yet confirmed) took off from Blida at 09:00 hrs.

    F/L D V Varian
    Sgt R T Southcott
    Sgt F McKendrick RAAF
    Sgt E Walker

Took off for operation Mascara No.1 but failed to return. All are commemorated on the Malta Memorial.

AB Serials has, on this date

FK389 Hudson VI of 117s shot down in error by US fighters at Thélepte, Tunisia

Does this loss enhance understanding, or merely complicate?
