    Hello,

991345 LAC Francis Herbert WAINES RAFVR, died as a POW in Japan, on 22-1-1943. He is buried in Yokohama War Cemetery.

Is he listed on GRO RAF War Deaths?

    Thanks,

    Hi AlanW,

Thanks for that. Same resullt in Unsung Heroes of the Royal Air Force/Stubbs & Stubbs p.237.

The reason I ask, is that Waines has an A705 file at the NAA. There must be an Australian connection.

No unit given in the Hakodate Main Camp list either, though he is listed as having died of acute enteritis. His nationality is also given as British.

    Hi Amrit,

Thanks. The term, "British", in the war-time Australian context, can be misleading. Technically, all Australians at the time were British Subjects. More than a few free-thinkers, proudly placed "Australian" on their enlistment papers. Pity, more didn't do so!

Waines' service number indicates a UK enlistment at Cardington/Padgate, February-August, 1940.
