Default Gladiator loss, 1st March 1940

    Hi,

According to 263 Sqn Form 540 a Gladiator struck a chance light while landing at Hornchurch on 1st March 1940. Pilot Officer Purdy was ok but the Gladiator was badly damaged and later struck off charge.

I tried to order Form 541 to see if it could supply more info but the NA said it was unavailable.

Would anyone know the serial of this Gladiator?

    Hi Alex,

    I have a possible 263 Sq Gladiatior N5690 which was S.o.C. on 5/4/40. NFD.

    Source: `RAF Aircraft L1000 - N9999` J.J.Halley.

    Regards.
    Dave.

    Hi Dave,

    Thanks for your reply.

According to information received from an earlier query N5690 was lost in a collision with N5688 on 29th March 1940. Both pilots, Plt Off P J M Nettleton and Plt Off D E D Milsom lost their lives.

Most of 263 Sqn's Gladiators can be accounted for. Although there are two that have no further details after being allocated to the squadron. They are N5697 and N5698. It is possible that the one I'm looking for is one of these two.

    Hi Alex,

It may be worth just asking Hendon if they have any F1180s for these two aircraft for the 1/3/40. At least if they don`t you can eliminate them from your search.

    Regards.

The Filton ORB (which mentions this incident even though it happened at Hornchurch) cites N5368 (sic) and the F1180 cites the a/c involved as N5638. Although believed at the time to be a write-off it seems that it was repaired as it has a subsequent history with the FAA.

As you've noted 5588 and 5690 collided on 29/03, killing both pilots.

    Hi,

Thanks for all your replies, much appreciated. I'll order up some aircraft movement cards and F1180's for the three Glads N5588, N5638 and N5690 and see what I can piece together.

    FAA Aircraft 1939 to 1945 records N5638 as: To 8.MU 22.7.42; Crail 2.10.42-4.44; PD (papers depositied) 18.10.45

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the info. That's one book I'd like to see just for the Glad/Sea Glad info.

    Default Gladiators

    Hi Alex,

As there were only 3 pages in the FAA book I have e-mailed them to you.
