    Default 414565 Hopgood C B 460 Sq Raaf

I am doing research on Clifford Berger Hopgood (Nav) KIA 24.2.1944 whilst on operations with 460 Squadron RAAF. His service file on NAA states that he was posted to 27 OTU on 8.6.1943, to 1656 CU on 5.9.1943 and to 625 Squadron RAF on 11.11.1943 "on strength for training only". He was posted to 460 Squadron RAAF on 28.11.1943. Can anyone tell me if he did any operational flying with 27 OTU, 1656 CU or 625 Squadron and if so when and to where. I have his 460 information.

    Thanking you in anticipation.

    Dave,
I've got the 625sqdn ORB, i'll have a look and get back to you later.
    Alan.
Back again, no sign of him on any ops with 625sqdn.

    Default Hopgood

Dave - Clifford Hopgood did not do any operational sorties from 27 O.T.U Lichfield with the possible exception of a 'Nickel Operation' at the end of the course which would have been the dropping of propaganda leaflets over France.
His three month stay would have included cross country flights ending with practice bombing on Cannock Chase. Should you want to know any more contact me off board on chris@lichfield.plus.com.

    Default ND394 - Villers-sous-Preny

    Hello Dave and all.

Whilst researching the losses of the Schweinfurt op 24/25 Feb 44, I have taken an interest in the Lancaster of W/O Baxter and crew.

    From Chorley
    "Lancaster III ND394 AR-J2 Take off 1802
    Baxter and D'Arcy evaded
Mallon, Hopgood, Ferguson and Dunlop killed
    Martin POW
Attacked at 22,500ft by a nightfighter and crashed at Villers-sous-Preny, 33km NW of Nancy."

I have an article (in French but I've done my best to translate) about the crash, written by Armand Cassalini. Please let me know if you want me to send it.
Also a copy of the Bomber Command loss card for ND394, op report and map.
I've also had a look at the Hopgood documents on the Australian Archives site - are any of the other Australian crewmembers documents available. I am having log on problems with NAA at the moment so cannot request further archives at this time.
Chorley does not list either Baxter's or D'Arcy's evasion reports as being available at Kew which is unfortunate.

Dave do you have any photographs of Hopgood or the others?

    Regards

    Mike

    Default Hopgood

    Mike,

Thank you for responding. None of the service and casualty files of the other crew members are currently open on NAA and now that there is a charge attached to file openings I don't propose to apply to have them opened. My research interest has been Hopgood alone. Regretfully I don't have any photographs of him or the others. I would be able to give you a brief synopsis of his schooling at the Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane if you are interested.

I would appreciate it if you could send me the article, the loss card, report and map and anything else that might be of interest by PM.

Back on 20 December 2006 (PC) Peter posted the following in response to my question as to who may have shot the Baxter aircraft down and I quote,

"Ofw. Reinhard Kollak 8./NJG4 34th claim near Metz: 6.000 m.21.57 Info c/o Theo Boiten. I recommend his book "Night Air War" "

I trust this is of assistance

    Thanking you,
    Dave
