    Default RAF Abbreviation Reference

    Hello all,
My airman finished OTU and then was posted to No. 22 Personnel Transit Centre at Almaza, Egypt and finally went to No. 3 B.P.D. (ARP) in Naples.
I´d like to ask you for help with deciphering abbreviation and for explanation of purpose of this RAF unit: No. 3 B.P.D. (ARP) in Naples. Is it Base Personnel Depot?
    TIA
    Milan

Milan, It is possible that ARP means Awaiting Return Passage. I have seen APR (Awaiting Passage Return) on NZ documents. Regards, Terry

    Hi Steve,

What a shame that this thread will vanish in a few days (or hours!) given the number of people who post on this forum.

On the old version of this forum a Canadian researcher, Jason Gaudet, had a huge list of RAF and Dominion Air Forces acronyms and terms which was constantly being updated. It doesn't seem to have made the migration over here in 2007.

You might want to put this on the Useful Books and Research Materials category and we can start again.

    Regards,

    Dave

Please note, USAAF = United States Army Air Forces (plural); this is frequently overlooked, but this organization really did include a whole lot of numbered Air Forces in WW2 (and since), specifically Nos. 1 to 15, and 20 during WW2. Although no longer relevant, does the USAF still contain distinct numbered "Air Forces", or not?

Also ASV = Air (to) Surface Vessel, NOT Airborne.
