    Default No.500 Sqn. - Hudson AM532 - 2-8-1943

    Hello,

On 2-8-1943, No.500 Sqn. Hudson V AM532, dived into the ground, 3 miles west of Tafaraoui, Algeria. I have two casualties for this accident:

AUS401977 F/O (Pilot) Logan Kenyon LINDSAY RAAF +
    AUS405885 F/Sgt Ivan Harley SHIELDS RAAF +

Can anyone expand on the above? Were there any other crew/casualties involved?

    Thanks,

    Col.

    Hi Col

There don't appear to be any other likely candidates for that date so they may be the only casualties.

    Hello Malcolm,

I'm beginning to think along the same lines. I have thoroughly checked the usual sources, ie GSE etc. There is no A705 for Lindsay at the NAA (his A9300 is digitised, but of no help), and the files for Shields are undigitised. I think the nature of the crash precludes survivors, then again!

There is mention of one, R/106287 Sgt Sullivan, in the Item Notes of Shields' A705, but I am unsure of his involvement, if any.

    Thanks for your help,

    Col.

    Hi Malcolm,

I can now tell you that, the reason for Sullivan's inclusion in Shields' file, is the fact that he was a member of the following crew:

    2-9-1943
    No.500 Sqn.
    Hudson VI FK667

Failed to return from A/S search off Cape Rosa.

    Crew: (Alpha order)

    AUS411483 F/O Frederick John CLERKE RAAF +
656364 Sgt Cecil GOLBY RAF +
    934481 F/Sgt Charles SALISBURY RAFVR +
R/106287 Sgt Russel Creth SULLIVAN RCAF +

All commemorated on the Malta Memorial.

So he is out! (being mentioned only incidentally).

    Thanks Mate,

    Col.
