Default Air Commodore Henry George CROWE M.C.

I am researching the life and times of Henry George CROWE, born 1897 in Donnybrook, Dublin.

Amongst his many service awards and decorations was the 'CHINESE CLOUD AND BANNER DECORATION with SPPECIAL CRAVAT.

Crowes service began in WWI at age 18 when he attended the RMC Sandhurst then later joining the Royal Irish Regt during the Somme battle in 1916. In 1917 he was attached to the Royal Flying Corps as a u/t Observer on 20 Sqn. and 2 Sqn In 1918 following further training in the UK became a fighter pilot on 106 Squadron.

Post war he remained in the RAF flying as a fighter pilot on 105 Sqn., 2 Sqn., 35 Sqn., 14 Sqn., CO of 23 Sqn., CO of 74 Sqn, the last three specialising in photo recce. During WWII, after several HQ posts which included India, he retired as a Air Vice Marshall retaining the rank of Air Commodore. He died in North Yorkshire 1983.

Could anyone please tell me what the Chinese decoration was for? I suspect it may be for his service in India but only guessing. Thank you.

The following document at Kew may give some answers: AIR 2/8953 - DECORATIONS, MEDALS, HONOURS AND AWARDS: Chinese Government: awards of decorations.
