    Default F/O J W Clifford POW, when?

Hi, I am trying to research 140588 F/O J W Clifford, aircrew RAF, who was taken POW during WW2, POW records indicate Number 5855 in Camp L1. Can anybody shed any light on how or when he was made POW?

    Thanks in advance,
    Rick

    Hi Rick,

He is not listed in Oliver Clutton-Brock book 'Footprints on the sands of time' so he was not with Bomber Command.

    Sorry,

    John.

    Hello,

I have copied the PoW questionnaire of a Sgt G.W. CLIFFORD from No. 150 Squadron, captured north of Reims (France) on 19 May 1940, in WO 344/65/2 at Kew.

Not your man, but his questionnaire should be in the same volume at The National Archives. This should give you his first names, date of birth, wartime address, his unit, date and place of capture.

Ross's lists on this site and the London Gazette give his serial number as 140866.

Pit. Offs. (prob.) to be Fig. Offs. on prob. (war subs.):
    7 Nov 1943
    J. W. CLIFFORD (140866).

    making him
    8th May 1943.
    1413225 John William CLIFFORD (140866).

Fig. Off. to Fit. Lt (war subs )
    8th May 1945
    J W. CLIFFORD (140866).

So, depending on his rank upon beign taken prisoner, it may have been around mid 1943?

140866 for F/O J.W. CLIFFORD is correct; I've him on Stirling IV EF267 of 299 Sqn, crashlanded 19-9-1944 near Castle Wijchen, SSW of Nijmegen in The Netherlands.
    Regards,
    Henk.

    Hi,
I have now discovered the names of the full crew:
Can anybody help with POW camps/numbers as they are all confirmed as POW but some are not listed anywhere.

Crew EF267 299 Sqn Shot down by Flak 19th Sept 1944

    AUS422531 P/O Bayne CAR Pilot RAAF ? ?
    AUS418988 F/Sgt Tee W WOP RAAF ? ?
1538492 Sgt Dixon LW BA RAF POW L7 839
    140866 F/O Clifford JW NAV RAF POW L1 5855
R/209918 Sgt Robbins LW AG RCAF POW ? ?
    1567551 Sgt Hume W FE RAF POW ?* ?*

T/10662795 W Nicholson Driver, Royal army Service Corps, Air Dispatcher, confirmed POW (No details)
T/14318934 A Hicks, Driver, Royal army service Corps, Air Dispatcher, Confirmed POW Stalag IV-B, number 91342
The above two army personnel are confirmed from the Australian NA file for CAG Bayne.

Both the pilot (Bayne) and WOP (Tee) are confirmed as POW by the Australian national archives.

    ? = Not on any POW Roll/list
?* = On the RAF POW Roll but with no details

    many thanks,

    Sgt L.W. ROBBINS RCAF R/209918 may have been P/O L.W. ROBINS - RCAF J/90395 - PoW L7-866.

    Henk.
