    Default F/Lt J E Dickinson, australian ?

    Hello !

I need some information on F/Lt J.E Dickinson, Air Gunner with 83 squadron in 1944.
Could have been Australian, his uniform is very dark on one picture ...
He was Mid Upper Gunner in the crew of S/L James Frederick Mitchell RCAF.
Could have been as F/Lt the Squadron Gunnery Leader of 83 Squadron .
He flew mainly on Lancaster ND840 OL-A. Any details on this kite ?

    Thank you for your help.

    Alain,

From www.ww2roll.gov.au I can only find 2 'J. Dickinson' (and no 'J.E. Dickinson').

Disregarding 'Jessie Bertha', that leaves 'John Alwyn'. However, he enlisted in Jan '44 and discharged in 1946 as a Leading Aircraftman. I doubt very much it is him.

There are 53 matching records on surname only for RAAF service in WWII. Good luck finding him if he is Australian!

    Regards

    Adrian

    Dear Alain
Can you be more specific on dates within a couple of months perhaps? I will look through the squadron history (Low & Harper)
    Best wishes
    James

S/L Mitchell ended his second tour of ops in June 44, so you could check the time of March-June 1944.

Thank you for your help !

Try Errol he might be RNZAF. Alternatively have you tried someone at the 83 Sqn Assn. Ron Low 01472-814768 is listed as the contact in the RAFRA list.

    Alain,

Lancaster ND840 (OL.A) was delivered to 83 squadron in April 1944 from 32 MU.
It was then delivered to 97 squadron (OF.J) in June 1944.
Shot down by flak 6 August 1944 during an attack on Bois de Cassan.

    Thank you all !
It seems that this lancaster was fitted with SABS, to do accurate marking .
S/L J F Mitchell used ND840 first time on 18 April 1944, moving from Wyton to Coningsby.
As you know 83 and 97 Squadron were posted to 5 Group at this date, with also 627 Squadron following the ask of Cochrane .
W/C J R Jeudwine used too ND840 after his posting as Controller to 54 Base Coningsby .
    With S/L Mitchell, ND840 OL-A did these ops :

    20 April 44 La Chapelle.
    22 April 44 Brunswick
    26 April 44 Schweinfurt
27 April 44 St Medard en Jalles
    1 May 44 Tours
    7 May 44 Salbris
    11 May 44 Bourg Leopold

    W/C Jeudwine:
    19 May 44 Tours
    22 May 44 Brunswick
    27 May 44 Morsaline guns

    S/L Mitchell:
    1 June 44 Saumur
5 June 44 Cherbourg gun battery
    6 June 44 Caen
    8 June 44 Cherbourg
14 June 44 Aunay sur Audon . Last operation of the second tour of Mitchell.

All this ops with 83 Squadron.

Dee, do you have an email address for Ron at all? Looks like Alain is in Polynesia so the phone call might be a bit pricey.

Alain, seeing the name Jeudwine reminded me of a book I have and I was about to offer a look up until I noticed your surname - confirmed by checking the shelf for Global Warrior by Lionel Lacey-Johnson, Geoffrey Jeudwine and ... Alain Charpentier. Never made the connection before. Nice work.

    Thank you Andy !

From the 97 Squadron Association :
    ND840 service with 97 Sq:

    F/O D E Shorter 4/5 July 44 St Leu D'Esserent
    F/O C Bucknell 12/13 July 44 Culmont Chalindrey
    F/O N N Parker 25/26 July 44 Stuttgart
    F/O C Bucknell 30 July 44 Cahagnes
    F/O B B Lindsay 1 August 44 Mont Candon
    F/O C Bucknell 3 August 44 Trossy st Maximin
    F/O G P F Taylor 5 August 44 St Leu D'Esserent
    F/O C Bucknell 6 August 44 Bois de Cassan Missing .

So ND 840 seems to disapear on its 23 ops ...
