    Default Martinet HP371 131 (C) O.T.U.

    Hello All,

The AM Form 78 has Martinet HP371 being delivered to 131 (C) O.T.U. on the 18.02.43 it is then recorded as missing with 143.25 flying hours recorded on 31.12.43. A-B HA100 - HZ999 have the aircraft force landing at Cliffong (?) following suspected fire. This incident is recorded as being Martinet HP370 on the AM 1180 and is a full year after HP371 is reported missing. Can any one confirm what befell HP371?

    Kind regards,

    Tim

The 'Cliffong' word you have Tim is a reference to the village of Cliffoney which is at the end of the road into Mullaghmore.

The crew of HP370 at Mullaghmore were
P/O Lionel Kenneth James SPINNEY 133760
    F/Sgt JONES 1416110

have been unable to find a full name for F/Sgt Jones, trawled the London Gazette as best I could. Spinney died a few years ago in London.

Checked my notes last night breifly and the irish Army report for HP370 does mention the serial numebr HP370, so it was recorded from the aircraft on site.

The report for F/Sgt McMillan does not mention the aircraft identity as it had burned out if I recall.

    Tony & Dennis,

Thank you for your help it is, as always, appreciated. Dennis rather slow of me but I have just accessed your excellent website which has proved most interesting, with the additional Martinet information now placed on file.

    Kind regards,

    Tim

I spent a massively mind numbing three nights I think scanning over AIR78 for the surname Jones (not recommended)

These were the bset matches I came up with

    Richard Rees Jones 1416120

    Ronald Jones 1416100

    William Issac Jones 1416116

I must do some hunting on ancestry.com when i get a moment.

I came across this looking for F/O Lionel Kenneth James SPINNEY 133760 RAF(VR) who was the sole survivor of Sunderland DW105 that crashed at Port Etienne on 5th January 1944.

With the benefit of Forces War Records now available I had a look for the elusive F/Sgt Jones. There was a Daniel Thomas JONES 1416118. I double checked with Air78. No Trace LG or CWGC.

    Thanks Chris,

I hadn't tried that! Many thanks. William Issac and Daniel Thomas look the best options.
