    Default When to use captialization

    Gentlemen,

Bill Gunston in his book "Janes's Aeropace Dictionary," uses both captialization and lower case with words such as GEE or Gee, and LORAN or Loran. I cannot determine his reasoning for capitalization and non-capitalization. Does it matter? Is either acceptable?

If it is an acronym, a word made from the initial letters of the name of the devicwe then it should be capitalized - RADAR.

If it is the name given to a device it usually has a capital letter initial and the rest lower case.

BUT, where the acronym has almost become a generic, then it usually then has an initial capital and the rest lowwer case.

That is why Radar is often now given like that.

On the same theme, but in the opposite direction, it annoyed me to see some American publications starting to write Yagi (Family name of one of the Japanese co-inventors of this very useful design of aerial still very widely used throughout the world) as YAGI as though it were an acronym.
