Default Aircraft Crash in Buffalo, NY March 1944

F/S E.A. Balderson was killed 22 March 1945 while stationed at Pennfield Ridge, NB. In the newspaper account it states: "A year ago last March, he survived when his aircraft plunged into the roof of a Buffalo house."

LAC E.A. Balderston would have been at No.4 W.S., Guelph, ON (SOS 24 March 1944) or #6 B.G.S., Mountainview, ON (TOS 25 March 1944) at the time of the accident.

Can anyone provide me details on the crash and those involved ?

    Regards,
    Christian

    Default Moth Prang

    G'day Christian

It was Menasco Moth Mk. II, s/n 4895.

The accident occurred at 14:15 hours on the 9th of March 1944.

    Pilot - R188487 Sergeant W. L. Knowles - He was slightly injured

    WAG - R257476 LAC E. A. Balderson - Also slightly injured

The pair were carrying out a W/T exercise and themselves in poor visibility. Sgt. Balderson climbed above the clouds discounting the high winds. When he let down through to check his position he was in the centre of a snow squall. His engine iced up and he attempted to clear it by the usual methods but could not and attempted a precautionary landing in a clearing striking the roof of a house.

The house was No. 34 Paderewaki Drive in Buffalo, New York.

    Cheers...Chris

Thanks Chris. I'm guessing you meant Sgt. Knowles climbed above the clouds ?
