    Default 601 Sqn – 4 July 1943 combat

    Hello,

I have some information via an AWM file which suggests 601 Sqn RAF claimed a MC.202 South of Comiso on 4 July 1943.

“…….one enemy a/c seen to go ‘in’ five miles South of Comiso. P/O Baxter (RAAF) was one of four pilot who shot this aircraft down.”

It was made during an escort for Mitchell bombers by Spitfires of 601, 1 SAAF and 154 Sqns. Spitfires over Sicily has the following “ .....one pilot opened fire but saw no results”.

Could someone please help with further details about this incident? In particular if a claim was actually lodged, who were the other claimants, any a/c serials for Spitfires involved or possible Italian losses? Thanks in advance.

    Regards, Drew H

    Default Baxter

    Hi Drew

I have a P/O R.U. Baxter of 601 Squadron making a couple of claims in March 1943, but nothing listed for 4 July.

    Cheers
    Brian

Thanks Brian. Looks like it could be a false lead for the 4th July claim! Is there any chance you would have Baxter’s (Aus.403461) Spitfire serials for claims on 10 Mar 43 (1/2 share Bf 109 dest) and 13 Mar 43 (1 MC.202 dam)?

    Regards, Drew
