    Default Accident in Palestine 9th June 1939

    On 9th June 1939 a bomb exploded whilst it was being unloaded from Hardy K4068 of No 6 Sqn.

    I believe the following personnel were killed in this accident; can anybody confirm/deny/add details? In particular were any of those killed the crew of the aircraft?

    P/O Gerald Alfred MCWHINNEY ;
    AC1 Frank Troughton DAWSON;
    LAC Henry David DYER;
    AC1 Henry George WHEATON

    Two separate incidents

    The Times of June 19th 1939 confirms

    LAC DYER and AC1 Wheaton killed when one Bomb they were unloading accidentally exploded on Ramleh airfield

    another paragraph says

    Reuter reports from Jersusalem state that P/O MCWHINNEY and Aircraftmna DRAWSON (not Dawson) were killed near Amman, in Transjordan when an RAF Armoured Car capsized owning to a burst front Tyre

    Default Accident in Palestine 9th June 1939

    Paul,

    Thanks for information. The names came from the Ramleh cemetery list in which the name is spelt as DAWSON; this list is based on CWGC information but I am not certain whether or not it has been transcribed.

    I had considered non aircraft related causes but was a little bit misled by another two entries, one of which refers to a road traffic accident (AC1 Hennesy, 22.7.39) and the other to 1ACC (AC2 Williams on 18.7.36).

    One more name ticked off on Errols list.

    Guardian Archives where you say

    MCWHINNEY <AND> DRAWSON

    gives a headline on Saturday, June 10, 1939 that says

    Four RAF Men Killed

    So the Air Ministry report had hsi name down as DRAWSON

    Paul,

    You beat me to checking with the Guardian online archives.

    Do you know how AC2 Williams died on 18.7.36?

    Default Accident in Palestine 9th June 1939

    Paul,

    The only information I have so far is the entry on the Ramleh cemetery list quote:

    "WILLIAMS, Aircraftsman 2nd class, A.G, 517094, No 1 A.C.C. Royal Air Force, 18th July 1936"

    There may be a clue from another entry for AC! King, for which the entry is:

    "KING, Aircraftsman 1st Class, A.E, 513269, No 2 A.C.C. Royal Air Force, 21st July 1936"

    Perhaps a major operation against dissidents? I have checked Guardian archives with a variety of keywords but I cannot turn up any more information. I will be consulting RAF Regiment records later in the week.

    David
