Default ID of aircraft shot down by U-955 5 May 1944

I'd be grateful if anyone could identify the aircraft claimed to have been shot down by U-955 at 59.33N 20.12W on 5 May 1944. U-955 was a Wetterboote (weather reporting U-boat - hence my interest) and the U-boat.net forum has the aircraft as being a 201 Sqn Sunderland flown by F/Lt L H Baveystock. It is unlikely to have been Baveystock as not only did he survive the war but he was the pilot of the Sunderland that SANK U-955 in the Bay of Biscay on 7 June 1944 (source: K Wynn; U-boat operations of the Second World War - Vol 2).

Another alternative put forward was that the aircraft was a Liberator.

Using Goeff's Search Engine I'm unable to find any evidence that would link to a loss over the North Atlantic on 5 May. I suppose, if U-955's claim was correct, it might have referred to an American aircraft. The other option is that an RAF aircraft was involved but was only damaged and able to return to base.

Much obliged Bruce - that was long before I joined RAFC! The Sunderland is the one that appears on the Uboat.net forum, so I can make a correction.
