Default AUS404059 F/O William Coxon RUSSELL RAAF

    Hello,

AUS404059 F/O William Coxon RUSSELL RAAF, of No.229 Sqn., was killed on 16-5-1942 when the unidentified Hurricane he was flying crashed at El Ballah, in the Middle East.

Can anyone identify Russell's Hurricane? (possibly a BNXXX serialled IIC).

Alan Storr's RAAF Fatalities (Vol.7. 201 to 300 Sqns. p.201 of 308), is of no help.

    All help appreciated,

    Col.

A contender for the Hurricane loss (from AB serials)

BM978 of 1METS flew into ground during slow roll on 16-May-42 at El Balāh, Egypt

I have no other Hurricane loss in Egypt on this date

    DG,

    That's the one!

Russell was attending an Air Fighting and Air Firing Course at El Ballah, base of No.1 Middle East Training School (No.229 Sqn had disbanded on 29-4-1942).

I had a corrupted Hurricane serial which read; BN1978. I couldn't make heads nor tails of it.

    Appreciate your help,

    Col.
